Jan. 10 Bonfire to Kick Off America’s 250th in Litchfield

The historic town of Litchfield, which takes pride in its rich and significant Colonial and Revolutionary War era heritage, is holding a kickoff bonfire Jan. 10 to officially launch the series of 2026 events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The bonfire, which will take place on North Street Extension in the center of town from 4:45 to 8:15 p.m., also celebrates the 250th anniversary of the publication of Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense, which advocated for American independence and resonated with colonists through its clear, relatable language. The Abner hotel and Belden House and Mews will be providing warm snacks for those who attend the bonfire, which is presented by America's 250th in Litchfield, CT, a coordinating committee that falls under the auspices of The Litchfield Patriots, Inc., a nonprofit endorsed by the Board of Selectmen to coordinate and convene events in Litchfield to celebrate the 250th anniversary. In the event of high winds on Jan. 10, the bonfire will have to be rescheduled. Those planning to attend should check the www.A250Litchfield.org website or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/A250LitchfieldCT on the day of the event to make sure it is on. To learn more about what’s coming up, see the website calendar page https://www.a250litchfield.org/calendar and anyone with questions or an interest in this year’s celebratory events may also send an email to 250@litchfieldpatriots.org. You can also use that email address or send a message on Facebook if you’re interested in purchasing an 11 oz rocks glass with the A250 logo … and pierced by a musket ball. All proceeds from sales help to offset costs like bonfire insurance.
