Ice sailing on Bantam Lake.
December snowstorms brought winter to the Litchfield landscape early this year, and the winter solstice on Sunday, Dec. 21, makes the formal arrival of the season of cold, snow, and ice official.
Whether that makes you smile or grimace, winter in Litchfield is beautiful and an opportunity for rewarding seasonal experiences. Here are some recommendations that mix outdoor adventures with taking comfort in warm havens.
Enjoy Afternoon Tea at Belden House & Mews from 2 to 4 pm Sunday through Thursday featuring Wood Dragon Oolong, Darjeeling, Lapsang Souchong and White Peony teas by local tea impressario In Pursuit of Tea, along with savory and sweet items such as tea sandwiches and scones with clotted cream & jam. Reserve here.
When Bantam Lake more fully freezes over and the Connecticut Ice Yacht Club arrives for its winter residency, stop by to watch the yachts gliding over the ice. There’s no set schedule but most of the action is on weekend mornings and early afternoons.
Discover Litchfield’s tucked away used bookstore, the FCC Bookstore in the basement of the First Congregational Church. It’s open on many/most weekends. Check for updates on Facebook.
Get in some skiing at nearby Mohawk Mtn Ski Area (just 15 minutes away in Cornwall) and then warm up with some dining in Litchfield. (See our dining pages for options.)
