Run, Rock, and Recharge: Experience Litchfield Hills Road Race Weekend

Litchfield Hills Road Race weekend is right around the corner, and this “celebration of community spirit … brings together people from near and far to experience the charm of our historic town, our scenic countryside, and the warmth of our residents,” First Selectman Denise Raap writes in the official race booklet.
Whether you’ve been training all winter to tackle Gallows Lane, are looking for a vibrant family day out, or just want to soak in the community spirit, we assembled a guide for making the most out of the June 13-14 weekend that culminates with the 1 p.m. race and following awards ceremony.
Here’s how to experience Road Race Weekend magic as a runner, as a family with children, or as a spectator from town or just visiting.
🏃♂️ 1. The Runner’s Playbook: Conquering the Course
You’ve done the training—now it’s time to enjoy the rewards with a great showing in the 49th running of this world-class tradition wrapped in small-town New England charm.
- Beat the Sunday Rush: Skip the long lines on race day morning! Head over to Sage and Salt Restaurant on Saturday, June 13th between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM to grab your race bib and packet early. (Online registration can be done here.)
- Or You Can Register on Race Day: The registration tent opens at 10 a.m. for day-of registration, which is $60. Note that credit cards will not be accepted. The registration tent closes promptly at 12:45 and the race begins promptly at 1 p.m.
- Community & Gear: Keep an eye out for the Tracksmith “Envoy” pop-up truck stationed around town all weekend long, hosting community shakeout runs and showcasing limited-edition gear.
- Study the Map: Don’t stress about race-day logistics. Plan your arrival route using the handy Where to Park in this year’s official race booklet. Be sure to arrive early on Sunday morning before town road closures go into effect.
- The Ultimate Reward: Take the hills steady, brace yourself for the infamous Gallows Lane, and let the wall of noise from the spectators carry you across the finish line on the Green.
👶 2. The Family Game Plan: Non-Stop Fun for Kids & Parents
Road Race weekend is a treat for families, transforming the historic Litchfield Green into an open-air festival.

- Saturday Morning Market: Kick off your Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Litchfield Marketplace on the Green. It’s the perfect spot to browse local crafts, let the kids sample artisan snacks, and soak in the pre-race energy.
- The Main Event for Young Runners: Nothing beats the pure joy of the children’s division races. The competitive children’s 2.3-mile race for those 9-13 starts at noon, with registration from 9 to 11:30 on the Green. There’s also the Children’s Fun Run (200 yards for those 4-8 and 1 mile for those 8-10). Registration is 9 to 12 on the Green.
- Make a Day of It: Grab a spot on the grass, unpack a picnic blanket, and enjoy a classic New England weekend celebration.
🎸 3. The Spectator’s Guide: Food, Music, and Unrivaled Energy
You don’t need to lace up a pair of running shoes to be a part of the heartbeat of this weekend. Spectators help make the Litchfield Hills Road Race legendary.
- The Saturday Night Highlight: After a day of exploring the Marketplace, the party shifts into high gear. Join the town on Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m. for Rock the Block Party on the Green! Hosted by Litchfield Park & Recreation, it features live music from Night Shift. Bring your lawn chairs, your dancing shoes, and your friends for an unforgettable summer evening under the stars.
- Race Day Cheering Stations: On Sunday, grab breakfast at a local café, then plant your lawn chairs along the route. For the highest energy, stick close to the finish line on the Green. For the ultimate displays of grit and true crowd support, stake out a spot on the brutal Gallows Lane hill to cheer the runners when they need it most!
